A walkable old town of brick domes, trading arcades and quiet courtyards.

Why go.

Bukhara has been a centre of trade and learning for more than a thousand years. Its historic centre is compact, so monuments, workshops and tea houses are all a short walk apart.

Don’t miss.

  1. Po-i-Kalyan

The Kalyan Minaret, built in the 12th century, rises above a mosque and a madrasah facing each other across one square.

  2. The Ark

The old fortress of the emirs, with massive walls and views over the rooftops.

  3. Lyabi-Hauz

A shaded pool ringed by madrasahs and tea houses, the easiest place to slow down in the evening.

  4. Trading domes

Covered bazaars where embroidery, ceramics and metalwork are still made and sold.

When to go

Spring (April to May) and autumn (September to October) are the most comfortable months for walking. Summers are very hot, especially in Bukhara, and winters are cold but quiet.

Getting there

High-speed trains from Samarkand take about an hour and a half. Bukhara also has an airport with domestic and some international flights.
