Why go.

Most journeys start in Tashkent, the country’s largest city and main air gateway. Give it a day for the old quarter, the markets and the Soviet-era architecture before heading west.

Don’t miss.

  1. Chorsu Bazaar

A huge domed market for bread, spices, dried fruit and everyday life.

  2. Hazrati Imam

A complex of mosques and madrasahs in the old town, home to a celebrated early manuscript of the Qur’an.

  3. The metro

Stations decorated with chandeliers, marble and mosaics. Photography is allowed.

  4. Amir Timur Square

The green centre of the modern city, with an equestrian statue of Amir Timur.

When to go

Spring (April to May) and autumn (September to October) are the most comfortable months for walking. Summers are very hot, especially in Bukhara, and winters are cold but quiet.

Getting there

Tashkent International Airport has direct flights from many European and Asian cities, and trains link the city with Samarkand and Bukhara.
